DEPTFORD DELIGHT
In response to Andrew Smithson's excellent review in the pubs/eating out guide of T.J. Doyles pub (formerly Winstons), in Deptford, the headline reads "Irish charm is a class act" and this sums up the place perfectly.
Old-fashioned pubs with quality and character and are few and far between these days. However, T.J. Doyles has managed to capture these values. It offers local beers which are unique to Sunderland's two breweries. From the Bull Lane Brewery in the East end of Sunderland there is Sauce of the Niall, SoL, and Doyle's Neck Oil and from the Maxim Brewery in Rainton Bridge, Double Maxim in both draught and bottled versions. Good to see Doyle's helping local industry on Wearside. You're also guaranteed a friendly welcome in this Deptford delight as the owners go out of their way to greet you.
T.J. Doyles is child-friendly and has just open its new kitchen. They even put on a minibus service to take SAFC fans to home matches. T.J. Doyles manages to combine the ever-growing Sunderland/Irish connection very well and in my view is the best thing to happen on the Sunderland pub scene for a long time.
A RECENT VISIT TO T.J. Doyles
I had been meaning to get down to Doyles for some time after reading some positive comments in an echo review, a letter to the echo and many messages on the SMB about the place.
My pre-conception of the place was that maybe these characters: Daddyo, Kingdom Bhoy and Disco etc, from the SMB were over selling the place but having visited the pub I would say that if anything they have undersold the place.
The staff could not have been friendlier or more hospitable. I took the recommendation of the Gale beer from the website as I like my cask beer - and what a top drink. I hope you keep this ale on as it’s difficult for me to get to the Wessyton, Concord Washington from where I live. I loved the fire and the general atmosphere of the place. It had been years since I had had a drink in Deptford and will, no doubt be returning to T.J. Doyles very soon.
Cheers, TB
REMEMBERING OLD TIMES
It was our first visit to Sunderland in 10 years, and were just sight-seeing the old shipyards (and surrounding area) to see where our Grandfather worked. We passed T.J. Doyles and noticed they served food. We decided to stop off - and beleive me, we were not disappointed. The food was second to none, I sampled the "Homemade Steak & Guinness Pie" and my sister had the "Homemade Thai Fish Cakes". (Compliments to the Chef!) Our visit was topped of with a lovely new ale, Strong Winter G'ale (for myself) recommended by the Manager. A true Irish welcome towards "outsiders" (We come from Wales!) - A pub to be proud of!
THE FOLLOWING COMMENTS ARE FROM THE "SUNDERLAND MESSAGE BOARD" (SMB)
Top place plushly decorated, good range of drinks at decent price and with Setanta & Sky Sports its always worth a visit.
Well impressed 2 top Irish guys who run the place - Dermot and Kenny. They talk non stop which is good. Quality furnishings, quality barmaids too. Your onto a winner!!
What a brilliant addition to the Sunderland pub scene! Cask Double Maxim & Bull Lane's Neck Oil - superb pint or two ... and those Tayto crisps were very tasty.
Everytime I have been in on a weekend its been packed. The Sauce of the Niall is an excellent pint.
I was in T.J. Doyles for Kieran Halpin gig and what a cracking gig it was. The Guinness was brill as well.
What a fab place and the draught Magners and Tayto crisps to die for.
In before the skunks game 10.00am - Best cooked breakfast I have ever had in a pub - will be back for more!
My mate from Cork who was over for a week in Sunderland - he said he loved T.J. Doyles and the Guinness there was the best pint of Guinness he had all week in Sunderland.
We welcome all comments and views about our pub. If you wish to leave comments, please get in touch with T.J. Doyles.
